County Kerry: Ireland

Irish charm, ocean views and gentle mountains

A fabled green island of great beauty and mystical heritage, Ireland is one of the loveliest places to visit. Our hikes will concentrate in the southwest of Ireland in County Kerry staying three nights each in the villages of Dingle and Killarney.

The Dingle Peninsula, in Kerry, is the “last outpost of Europe and the next parish to America.”  Stretching westward from the town of Tralee, the Peninsula has a backbone of mountains, the highest being Mount Brandon at 3,127 feet. On the north side the Peninsula lie sandy beaches, which run almost continuously to Brandon Bay. To the West and south stately cliffs characterize the coastline.

This narrowest bit of land protruding further west than any other in Europe, the Dingle Peninsula is unique and incredibly beautiful. The ocean bounds on three sides and the coastline are of rugged cliffs. Fuchsia and stony faced farmlands rush from the heights of the foothills of the dominating mountains and throughout the peninsula. The archeological remains of ancient human habitation are abundant. Prominent in the homes of the area is the rich history of folklore linking the past and present traditions and customs spanning thousands of years. Irish is the first language of most and music, song, and dancing are vital elements of daily life.
At the close of the second millennium after some 6000 years of habitation, the community here is thriving with farming, fishing, and tourism, which are the primary industries. We will hike from the lovely seaside village of Dingle, which carries, on a rich-fishing tradition. Our second destination in Ireland will be the lovely town of Killarney with large lakes and impressive mountains nearby in the Irish National Park. This quintessential Irish town with its winding streets and small shops personify the quaint character of Ireland. Enjoy not only the exceptional hiking, but also the characteristic pub life where Guinness and song produce memorable evenings.
